The literary genuis of Sonia Sanchez was celebrated in July 2011 during a weeklong poetry seminar presented by the Furious Flower Poetry Center at James Madison University. The center is founded by Joanne Gabbin, one of the nation's top black literature scholars and a close friend of Sanchez. This exclusive recording was broadcast on the Feb. 8 The Wil LaVeist Show, which celebrated what makes women most attractive -- their intellect -- features a poem by Gabbin in honor of Sanchez, a prayer by their friend, fellow Black Arts Movement legend, Nikki Giavanni, and a poem about peace by Sanchez.
Anti-racism activist Ruby Bridges, who is known as the 6-year-old girl who helped desegregate schools in New Orleans during the 1960s, shares her message that racism is an evil that must not handed down to future generations. Her story of being the lone black girl in the elementary school and having to be escorted by U.S. Marshalls, was turned into a well-known Disney made for TV movie. Wil LaVeist interviewed Bridges after her keynote address at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. on Feb. 7, 2012.
